HERE'S an innovative business strategy.

A restaurant in the US has been abusing its own customers on social media, hurling racial insults at patrons for leaving modest tips.

“What do you expect from a last name like that? Sand n*****s will never change #cheap #jew,” read one Instagram post, underneath a photo of a receipt showing a 10 per cent tip.

The Instagram account, which was deleted immediately after Padi Restaurant, a pan-Asian restaurant in Delaware, was contacted by The News Journal, belonged to the restaurant’s manager, Aaron Kwan.

“With a last name like that, I don’t think you will ever expect a GOOD tip. #cheap #jerk #indian,” read another post.

One photo of a woman seated at the restaurant’s bar had the caption: “Cheap ass, order takeout and eat it at the bar #monday #cheap #trash”.

Mr Kwan denied writing the abusive messages himself, and claimed other employees of the restaurant could have used his iPad or smartphone when he left them lying around.

“Maybe some staff just have grudges against customers who did stuff to them? It’s not good to say that,”Mr Kwan told The News Journal.

“It’s not me, probably. I don’t have a computer right now.”

Whoever posted the messages on Instagram was also complaining about customers on Facebook.

“People need to take their meds before leaving the comfort of their home, why would you come to an Asian restaurant when you don’t feel like having Asian food,” read one status update.

Ok, that might be a fair point. Then again, the restaurant’s employees probably need to take their meds too if they think whinging about customers online will help.

Padi Restaurant owner Eve Teoh expects her business to suffer because of the abusive posts.

“This will hurt my business,” Ms Teoh said.

“Padi is deeply sorry. We will take action on our staff and hope this won’t happen again in the future.”
