Australian sharemarket opens higher

European and US markets added to yesterday's gains.

THE Australian stockmarket looks set to open firmer after Wall Street posted fresh highs during offshore trading.

At 7.06am AEST today, the June share price index futures contract was 11 points higher at 5022 points, with 3792 contracts traded.

US stocks pushed to new record levels overnight after the government's weekly report on jobless claims came  in better than expected.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 62.90 points, or 0.42 per cent, to 14,865.14, while the broad-based S&P 500 rose 5.64 points, or 0.36 per cent, to 1593.37.

Both the Dow and the S&P 500 set new all-time highs for the second day in a row overnight.

The tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index rose 2.90 points, or 0.09 per cent, to 3300.16.

In local economics news today, the Australian Office of Financial Management will sell $600 million of Commonwealth Government bonds with a maturity date of October 21, 2015.

Yesterday, the benchmark S&P/ASX200 index rose 0.79 per cent to 5007.1, while the broader All Ordinaries finished 0.74 per cent higher at 5010.3.
